Cold Weather Tonight...Freeze and Frost Warnings Posted for the New York City Suburbs and Upstate NY and CT

One of the last real chilly nights of Spring is coming up tonight. Frost sensitive plants should be protected or moved indoors. Late April cold air advection will produce low temperatures into the upper 20s and low 30s to the north and west of New York City tonight.  Parts of the Bronx, southern CT and notheastern NJ will see temperatures briefly reach freezing.  There is a chance of a few showers Saturday night and Sunday, otherwise the weather looks dry for most of the upcoming week. Strong Coastal Storm to Track Up the East Coast Sunday and Monday...Heavy Snow Central PA

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for nearly the entire New York City tri-state region. As much as 2 to 4 inches with locally higher amounts can be expected. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for parts of Central New Jersey until 10:45 p.m. this evening. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Central PA for Sunday night and Monday for as much as 8 inches of snow and sleet.  This will cause power outages and numerous down trees and limbs in Jamestown, Bradford and Dubois. A developing storm near Florida this evening will track northward up the coast on Sunday. A very strong upper level trough is digging down across the eastern third of the nation. A 500 mb cutoff low circulation is now tracking across the Gulf of Mexico. This low will combine with a northerly jetstream to produce a large slightly negatively tilted cutoff low by 2 AM Monday morning (in 36 hours). This upper level trough will intensify the surface low over eastern NC and VA and will steer it across eastern PA into central New York State by 8 AM on Tuesday morning (in 66 hours).

East Coast Rain!

Good news for the very dry conditions in the East. The latest models indicate that there will be some light rain and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow across the Southeast and in around the New York City metro area. A more significant storm is forecast to form along the Mid-Atlantic states on Saturday with another storm forecast to develop over the Southeast. The latest GFS indicates that the storm that forms over the Southeast will track far enough east thereby keeping the heavier rain off the coast. New Jersey, southeast New York and Connecticut are in a moderate to severe drought and any rain will be beneficial. Much cooler weather will prevail through early next week.

Drought Continues for the NYC Metro Area...Rain on the Way This Weekend.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect today for the entire New York Tri-State region as a result of the continuing drought conditions. The 88 degree high yesterday will be replaced by cooler but drier air so this could result in brush fires. The GFS model indicates that a storm could form along the Gulf Coast that could spread much needed rainfall to the region this weekend. But the amount of rain is uncertain. So far this year, Central Park is averageing 7.51 inches below normal precipitation. The reservoirs upstate are at 91% of capacity (normal at this time is 97%).
