It is still early and the forecast can change dramatically in the next few days, but the GFS is forecasting a hurricane for the central Gulf Coast and Florida on or about August 27-30, 2011. This forecast needs to be monitored over the next several days. The upper-level wind speeds are quite low during this time period and steering currents are forecast to be favorable for a northwesterly storm track. Warm air will take over much of the eastern half of the country as the jet stream retreats perhaps for one final time this summer season to the north.
