Major Winter Storm for New York City, NJ, CT and Long Island Sunday and Monday...

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the entire New York City metropolitan area including all of New Jersey, Connecticut, New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley of New York State, northeast Virgina and up into coastal New England. A storm will develop off the Carolinas and it will intensify as it tracks along the coast to the northeast. Look for snow to begin from south to north across the NYC tri-state area with as much as 6 to 12 inches with locally higher amounts falling by Monday afternoon.  The latest GFS runs continue to bring in heavier snow farther west than the NAM. Strong jet stream dynamics aloft will allow for strong upper-level divergence and high vertical velocities that will produce snowfall rates of 1" to 2" per hour with heavier amounts in heavy snow banding that may develop. More on this storm in future posts this weekend. Follow the storm with George Wright on Twitter.com at Twitter.com/gwweather.
