A sharp upper-air trough with an associated surface trough produced snow squalls that lowered visibility to 1/4-mile with 30 mph and up to 1 inch of snow in parts of the New York metropolitan area from approximately 5 PM to 9 PM this evening. Radar at 7:30 PM indicated an area of light snow and snow squalls from near Poughkeepsie to Manhattan. Another snow squall area was indicated across Hunterdon and Morris County. This squall produced 1/8 to 1/4 inch of snow that coated cars, grass and produced wet roadways that will become icy later this evening in eastern Middlesex County in the city of Perth Amboy. The weather will be windy and cold on this Christmas Eve with icy conditions in the morning. It will be sunny on Christmas Day with a high of only near 32. There is a chance of flurries or snow showers on Thursday and then it will be sunny and seasonable through the weekend. The weather on Christmas Day looks dry across most of the nation except for some light snow and snow showers across the Great Lakes and parts of New England. The GFS model is indicating that it will be cold the next two weeks from the northern plains to the Southeast and eastward into the Northeast. It looks dry but there is are a couple of chances of light snow with a more significant snowfall possible around January 4, 2014. Have a great Christmas.
