Snowiest February on Record in Central Park...36.9 Inches

With the 20.9 inch snowfall last week, Central Park set a record for the most snow in February with 36.9 inches.

Two Storms Miss NYC Area This Week, Strong Winds and Snow for Coastal New England...

The strong upper level low that produce our snow storm last week will move east forming another strong storm well off the coast of LI that will then move north and slightly towards the coast producing high winds and snow for north coastal New England tonight and Monday. No snow of any significance can be expected for the NYC metro area this week. With this strong storm out at sea, the ocean will churn up and a Coastal Flood Advisory in the effect for LI, CT, NY and NJ. Another storm will miss the Northeast on Thursday passing too far out to sea to produce anything more than flurries in NYC. We'll see scattered snow flurries tonight and scattered showers on Monday and Tuesday here in the NYC metro area, it will be cool this week.

20.9 Inches of Snow in Central Park...33 Inches in Harriman, NY

The major winter storm that dumped 21 inches of heavy wet snow is located just south of LI early this evening. It will move into CT and NY State tonight and then gradually southward across NJ and out to sea by early Sunday. Look for occasional snow showers and flurries through Sunday with only minor additional accumulations. It will be partly sunny with temperatures around 40 on Monday and Tuesday.

The Storm Continues...17 Inches so Far in Central Park

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through Saturday morning. Radar shows that snow is rotating around the NYC area, up to 20 inches expected in the city and more than 30 inches in upstate NY - 26 inches has already in Tuxedo, NY. So far 16.9 inches in Central Park, NYC has fallen since yesterday morning. Accumulating snow continues in Midtown with light traffic at 9:45 a.m. Large tree branches also broke and fell in Manhattan and Central Park. A total of 47.4 inches so far this season in Central Park, normal about 25 inches. So far . More than 20 inches in northwest NJ and the Catskills. Newark, NJ has received 13.6 inches through 9 AM. The storm is now centered new JFK Airport and is tracking west. The light snow will continue into this evening with 15 to 20 inches in and around the city.

Snow Continues Today in NYC Area, Very Low Barometric Pressure...24" + at Ski Resorts Upstate

The snow continues to fall today across the NYC metro area. This is a slow moving, strong storm. The pressure at midnight in Central Park was 28.97 inches or similar in pressure inside a weak hurricane. Thankfully the winds are not very strong but could gust to 40 mph today. The storm will do a rare loop from NYC westward across northern NJ, down across central and coastal NJ and then back out to sea by Saturday evening. The storm will weaken and will produce light snow and snow showers into Saturday afternoon. Avenues and side streets became snow covered earlier today in Midtown. For most of the day on Thursday the roads were mostly just wet with some slush in the city since the snow fell with temperatures above freezing for most of the day. Snowfall totals include 10 inches in Paramus, NJ; 5 inches in Newark, NJ; 18 inches in New Mildford, NJ and 23 inches in Mountain Lodge, NY. A total of 7.6 inches was measured in Central Park as of 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Heavy Snow Tonight for NYC Metro Area...Wind Gusts to 40 mph...

The storm that brought the snow will move inland across the city into NJ tonight with strong winds gusting to 40 mph and snow, heavy at times. At 9 PM a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Saturday morning. A total of 15 to 20 inches can be expected across northern NJ and up to 12 inches in the city and 4 to 8 inches in Long Island. The storm will weaken Friday afternoon and the snow will become lighter but snow showers can linger into Saturday morning

Major Winter Storm for NYC Metro Area Through Friday Afternoon...

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through Friday at 6 PM for most of the NYC tri-state area with heavy wet snow expected this afternoon and tonight. Lighter snow can be expected on Friday. The storm is now located to the south of Long Island. The rain/snow line is in a northeast to southwest line across western CT and Queens County to southern NJ. It is raining heavily in southeast Maine and over most of the eastern half of New England with snow in upstate NY, NJ and PA. We can expect 3 to 5 inches near the coast and Long Island, up to 6 to 10 inches in the city and up to 18 to 24 inches in the northwest suburbs and ski resorts. The storm will be centered near NYC Friday at 7 AM and there will be light snow falling at that time. The winds will gust to 40 mph at times especially late this afternoon and tonight.

Winter Storm Warning for NYC Metro Area...Heavy Wet Snow, Sleet and Rain...

The storm that is developing across the Southeast has produced a large area of rain and thunderstorms along the coast down there. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for PA, NYC, CT, northern and central NJ, CT and upstate NY. The rain/snow line is forecast to move into Nassau County and along the Jersey Shore and northeastward to New London County, CT. Look for 3 to 5 inches near the coast, up to 10 inches in the city and up to 18 to 22 inches in the northwest suburbs and ski resorts. The storm will be centered near NYC Friday at 7 AM and there will be light snow falling at that time. The winds will gust to 40 or 50 mph at times. More updates to follow.

Winter Storm with Strong Winds and Heavy Wet Snow for Thursday and Friday

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for NYC, central and northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, interior Connecticut and upstate New York through Friday evening. Models indicate that a strong storm will form along the southeast US and track up the coast, stall and retrograde or move to the west on Friday. The intense development of this storm will force warmer air in from the ocean near the coast in NYC, Long Island, coastal and southeast CT and southern NJ so that there will be rain and sleet falling in these areas for a time especially on Thursday afternoon. Accumulations will be 2 to 4 inches near the coast where it changes to rain and up to 6 to 8 inches in the city and as much as 12 inches or more in the northern and western suburbs where it stays all snow.

Major Storm for Thursday and Friday for NYC/S. New England?

The latest GFS/NAM numerical weather forecasts indicate a major coastal storm that could produce rain and sleet along the coast and heavy snow inland especially over the Lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut. A very strong upper level vortex will keep the storm circulating around it across New England resulting in a chance of snow showers into the weekend. The 850 32 degree line is forecast to be over NYC and with the storm track quite close the the city and LI, this does not look like a lot of snow for the coast but there will be some snow there. More on this storm later this week.

Active Pattern This Week, Mostly Rain on the Coast in NYC Tri State Area...

We have two storm systems this week that will spread snow, rain and sleet to the NYC tri-state region with mostly rain along the coast and Long Island with snow, sleet and freezing rain over interior northern NJ, upstate NY and CT. A blast of cold weather will extend down across the eastern third of the nation into northern Florida late this week.
